Fløirestauranten since 1925
The story of an iconic building at the top of the city.
Finally, after nearly a hundred years of operation, Fløirestauranten has become part of Destination Fløyen.
Fløibanen AS purchased the restaurant building in 2013. And now, ten years later, we have also taken over the operation of the building.
It was the Bergen architect Einar Oscar Schou who designed Fløirestauranten in the early 1920s. The interior, lamps, fittings and furniture were also entirely designed by him. The silhouette was meant to resemble a "Soria Moria Castle". The restaurant opened in 1925, and it is his best-known building from his later production. His portfolio also includes the theatre "Den Nationale Scene" in Bergen. A common feature of his buildings is the use of ochre yellow colours and simple geometric ornamentation. Schou's Fløibanen city station (1912–1918) is an early example of inspiration from older Bergen architecture.
We shall honour our roots, and we shall be conscious of the footprint we leave behind.
Over the years, many restaurateurs have tried their luck, followed by many bankruptcies. When the hotel "Hotel Norge" opened its banquet hall in 1964, Fløirestauranten in practice lost its role as the city's and municipality's grand hall and representative venue.
Eventually the building fell into disrepair, and the restaurant closed its doors in 1981. After a lengthy rehabilitation, "Bergen Tomteselskap" leased the building to Bellevue Restaurants owned by Eric Saudan in 1992. He ran it successfully for many years, and Fløirestauranten once again became a popular gathering place in Bergen. When Eric Saudan sold Fløirestauranten to Fløibanen AS in 2013, the agreement included a further ten-year operating contract.
When Fløirestauranten finally opened its doors again at Easter 2024, it was with a wish that Bergen should feel nostalgia and innovation, pride, belonging and ownership. A hundred-year-old restaurant house has been brought back to life in a new guise. The building has received much love, and we promise treat it with care and respect. For the next hundred years too.

The logo symbol for Fløirestauranten is inspired by the glass windows in the over 100-year-old doors. These were carefully restored during the extensive rehabilitation, and shine again in all their glory today.
